The Arrangement Conference
Your guide to the most important meeting. Equip yourself with the right questions to ensure your family's needs and budget are respected.
Critical Questions to Ask
A funeral director is there to help, but they are also a business. Use these questions to maintain clarity and control over the process.
"May I have a copy of your GPL?"
The General Price List must be provided to you at the beginning of the discussion. It is your right to see itemized pricing before choosing a package.
"Which fees are legally required?"
Ask specifically which costs are mandated by state law versus which are house policies. This helps eliminate unnecessary upselling.
"Can I provide my own casket?"
Federal law allows you to purchase a casket or urn from an outside source. The funeral home cannot refuse it or charge a fee for using it.
Preparation Tip: Bring a Support Person
Grief can make it difficult to process complex financial details. We recommend bringing a friend or family member who is not as emotionally involved to help take notes and ask follow-up questions about costs and options.
