Veteran & Social Security Benefits
Ensuring that those who served receive the honors they earned without unnecessary costs to their families.
Claiming Your Entitlements
Government benefits are available to help ease the financial burden of a funeral, but they must be applied for correctly.
The VA Burial Allowance
Eligible veterans may receive a flat-rate monetary benefit to help cover burial and funeral costs. This is typically paid as a reimbursement after the service has taken place.
Social Security Death Benefit
A one-time payment of $255 is available to a surviving spouse or eligible child. While small, this benefit is a legal right that must be claimed through the SSA.
National Cemetery Burial
Burial in a VA National Cemetery is free for eligible veterans, spouses, and dependent children. This includes the gravesite, opening/closing, and a perpetual care headstone.
Military Honors & Free Items
Be aware that several honors are provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs at no cost. You should never be charged for these by a private provider:
- The Burial Flag: Provided to drape the casket or accompany the urn.
- Presidential Memorial Certificate: An engraved paper certificate signed by the current President.
- Military Funeral Honors: At least two uniformed military persons to fold the flag and play Taps.
- Government Headstone or Marker: Provided even if the veteran is buried in a private cemetery.
