Understanding Funeral Costs

Transparency is the foundation of trust. We help you navigate General Price Lists (GPL) so you can make informed, pressure-free financial decisions.

Demystifying the General Price List

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) "Funeral Rule" requires funeral providers to give you an itemized price list. Here is what those items actually mean.

The Basic Services Fee

This is the only fee that is "non-declinable." It covers the overhead of the funeral home, including professional consultations, securing permits, coordinating with third parties, and the 24-hour availability of staff.

Cash Advance Items

These are fees charged by third parties that the funeral home pays on your behalf. Examples include flowers, obituary notices in local papers, death certificates, and clergy or musician honorariums.

Transport & Care

Prices will vary for the "First Call" (transfer of the deceased), embalming, or "other preparation" (washing and dressing). You have the right to choose direct cremation or immediate burial without embalming.

Merchandise Selection

This includes caskets, urns, and outer burial containers. You are not required to purchase these directly from a funeral home; federal law allows you to provide a third-party casket without an extra fee.

Common Cost Categories

When reviewing a quote, ensure it is broken down into these three primary areas to avoid hidden surprises:

  • Professional Services: Staffing, facility use, and basic fees.
  • Merchandise: The physical items selected for the service.
  • Third-Party Costs: Cemetery fees, permits, and external vendors.
  • State & Local Taxes: Applicable to merchandise in most jurisdictions.
  • Opening/Closing Fees: The cost to dig and fill the grave (charged by the cemetery).
  • Urn/Casket Upgrades: Personalization and material variations.
